Pop review: Ash

It has become fashionable for bands to phase one-off shows that revisit a classical album in its entireness. In Ash's case, the only real contender for the treatment is their debut, 1977, which was as uplifting a ingathering of garage-rock as you could accept asked for back in Britpop-dominated 1996. Though thither have been four subsequent albums, the Irish trio have never matched 1977's combination of exuberance, romance and hormones; the outlook of hearing it live resulted in a crammed-full Roundhouse.

Having announced last year that their only future releases will be digital singles, Ash possibly approached this show with mingled nostalgia and resentment. How pleasant can it be to spend an evening being reminded that your creativeness peaked at the age of 19? And it was quite a extremum. Reprised here, 1977 showed itself to have aged well, apart from a few noisy fillers.

The band's entrance was announced by three characters dressed as Darth Vader and Jedi friends - 1977 was, of course, the class of Star Wars - and then it was straight into the album. Now, as then, the singles Goldfinger, Girl from Mars and Oh, Yeah were the stand-outs, suffused with yearning and tune. Still limber and unhinged for it, singer Tim Wheeler asked: "Do you feel like you've changed much since 1996? Because I don't." He hadn't played some of these songs in a ten, he added. That was hard to believe: the band expertly navigated even the sub-metal contours of Let it Flow and Innocent Smile.

After such a joyous visit to the past, nothing more was necessary, but we got it anyway: they encored with a dozen random tracks, from ancient B-sides to Motown covers. It was rather also much of a unspoilt thing, simply who could have begrudged them?

Jonas Brothers Fever Hits New York At Group's 'Good Morning America' Appearance

NEW YORK Mothers, hide your daughters: Jonas Brothers mania has taken over New York City.

The trio of teen heartthrobs Nick, Joe and Kevin rocked a packed Bryant Park in Midtown Manhattan for their "Good Morning America" appearance Friday (August 8), courtship both daughters and mothers alike. One mom held a sign that record, "Make me a Jonas mother-in-law"!

The guys played a quick correct containing several fan favorites including "S.O.S." and their VMA-nominated hit "Burnin' Up" and snippets of a couple other songs from their young LP, out Tuesday, A Little Bit Longer. (Hear the solid album on "The Leak"!) But truthfully, what they were playing was difficult to hear over the screams and may well have been irrelevant to the near-hysterical (and very loud) crowd.

It was a scene straight out of Beatlemania: There were reports of several people fainting, although it was unclear whether that was due to the size of the crowd or the effect of the boys on that crowd.

One group of friends from Connecticut had worked on T-shirts for two days to march their devotion to the band; the shirts were filled with messages, lyrics and pictures of the guys. "We found pictures that we really loved on the computer and then we put them on the shirts and then we started designing them," Crystal, 12, told MTV News. "It was all worth it because we got to see the Jonas Brothers!"

Some teenage girls braved a rainy night on the street just to catch a glimpse of the boys, braving arguments between fans and even vermin patch waiting to get into the park. New York-area native Naisa, 14, and Maryland native Paula, 13, told MTV News, "It was horrifying! When we went to the aim station at that place was rats. [Outside the park,] citizenry were shoving each former. There were a lot of fights." Still, they thought the Jonas' appearance was zippo less than "awesome."

Katie, 17, from New Jersey, and her sisters traveled to the metropolis a sidereal day in advance to get a place in Bryant Park. "We wanted to get the best seating and we wanted to have merriment camping out," she aforementioned. "Well, we go to hear their new songs too, which was awful. The Jonas Brothers ar worth camping out for any day!"

Still, we couldn't help only ask: Rats, rain, fights, a night on the streets of New York City? What is it about these guys that has girls traveling hundreds of miles and lining up two or three days in advance for this gig?

For some it's their tunes, for others it's their image. "They really put everything they can into their music and they really love their fans, so they deserve it," said Amber, 14, who'd traveled from Rhode Island on a bus by herself to catch the show. "They're great inspirations to kids. They're a very wholesome band and they redact everything they can into it."

Cristina, 10, from Queens, New York, said she loves the boys because "they're hot. They're precious. They're very cool."

But for one girlfriend, the answer is selfsame simple if slenderly unexpected.

"Nick is the charles Herbert Best. He has great eyebrows," one frantic 16-year-old proclaimed. "Every guy rope should suffer great eyebrows."

Don't have Jonas fever yet? Well, and then be sure to catch the guys when they're on "TRL" next week for "Jonas Brothers TRL Fan Week"!

FLOBOTS

Fight With Tools (Universal Republic): A-

Flobots deserve the sudden hype. An organic Denver-based hip-hop outfit with a political slant and viola player Mackenzie Roberts pulling strings, the band is rap music’s most singular breakthrough act in years. On their major label debut, some of Jonny 5 and Brer Rabbit’s rhymes overplay anti-establishment cliches, but in a genre so overrun with ignorance it’s refreshing to hear MCs creatively push progressive values. Pop meets poetry at uni

They might not be Shakespeare or Wordsworth but lyrics by soul singer Amy Winehouse have been included in a Cambridge University literature exam for the first time.Final year English students were asked to compare a song by the singer with verses from Elizabethan poet and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. The university defended its decision to include lyrics from the 24-year-old's hit single Love is a Losing Game in the exams, while critics accused it of dumbing down.On the same day last week that the song, from Winehouse's breakthrough release Back to Black, won a prestigious Ivor Novello award, students were being asked to compare it to the 16th century poet's work As You Came from the Holy Land. They could also write about Bob Dylan's Boots Of Spanish Leather or Billie Holiday's Fine And Mellow during the practical criticism exam.Cambridge officials said students were then asked to compare Raleigh's poem, written in 1592, with one or two of the designated songs while making reference to the "diverse senses of lyric".

Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education group, said it amounted ot "dumbing down" the exams.- REUTERS
